Meet Roy, the friendly face you'll find at our Jermyn Street store. Roy, with his expert tailoring knowledge, is a valuable member of our team. While his title might be Sales Advisor, Roy insists he doesn't sell. He embodies the essence of genuine customer service, offering warm, trusted, and honest advice that keeps customers returning. Roy believes in making people feel like valued guests when they arrive at Jermyn Street. When asked how he got into tailoring and menswear, he simply says that it runs in his family. His father was a tailor and cutter, as was his grandfather who was also a tailor and cutter. Roy grew up in South East London, Elmers End, where he still lives today.
Roy's menswear career began on Savile Row at Gieves & Hawkes, where he learned the tricks of the trade from the very best. The stories of his days there are like a history lesson in the evolution of retail. He reminisces about the floorwalker who ensured every aspect of the store was absolutely perfect, inspecting every display and cabinet while providing tips and prompts to staff about customers coming into the store. For instance, Roy fondly remembers the day when the floorwalker pointed out that a customer was 'down at heel' of his shoe and suggested he check his account before placing any orders—an anecdote that illustrates just how far retail has come since then.
Roy also recalls the ingenious shoe salesman he worked with who would take the customers' shoes to the stockroom, making it nearly impossible for them to leave without making a purchase. These tricks-of-the-trade have contributed to Roy's wealth of knowledge and expertise. He describes these people as ‘leaving their mark as you learn as you go’.
Before working at Oliver Brown, Roy honed his skills at Ede & Ravenscroft, where he worked for 26 years. During his time there, he served everyone from the legal profession to members of Royalty. Roy's experiences at these esteemed establishments have shaped him into the consummate professional he is today.
At Oliver Brown, Roy has found a home. Since starting to work here two years ago, he describes his time here as a ‘breath of fresh air’ in the world of menswear, relishing the creativity of the environment. When asked for his favourite moment or memory while working at our Jermyn Street store, Roy simply replies, ‘every moment’. For Roy, the heart of his work lies in the experience he provides to every customer. Roy's expertise, honed over decades, allows him to suggest styles customers might not have considered before. His keen eye for detail helps him make expert suggestions, guiding customers towards choices that perfectly suit their taste and occasion.
Roy shared a few products from the new collection that he loves. He loves the Fine Merino Wool Waistcoat in Charcoal, describing it as a useful layering piece. He says that the Field Coat in Nailhead Tweed is well done, beautifully made and can be worn in town and country. He also says the Covert Coat, Covert Collar - Grey is a classic style that seems to be making a comeback especially as people are starting to look for smarter looks going back to the office.
In Roy's world, every customer is respected, every suit is a masterpiece, and every day is an opportunity to provide an experience that makes someone's day that little bit better. When you purchase from Roy, you’ll receive the most exceptional care and customer service - when your suit is back from alteration, he’ll insist he is in on that day to make sure it is no less than absolutely perfect. So, the next time you visit our Jermyn Street store, say hello to Roy. He'll become your personal style guide, dedicated to making your Oliver Brown experience unforgettable.
